Every content platform on the market now advertises AI, which makes the label almost useless as a buying signal. Shopping for a CMS with AI in 2026 means learning to tell three very different things apart, because vendors use the same vocabulary for all of them.
- AI-powered features. Embedded helpers for specific tasks—draft this paragraph, suggest keywords, translate this field, tag this image. Useful, reactive, and now common to nearly every platform.
- AI agents. Software that interprets an instruction and executes multi-step actions across content, structure and workflows, inside defined permissions.
- Agentic operations. Agents embedded in the workflow itself, running continuously and at volume, with governance and an audit trail—so the platform runs content operations rather than assisting with individual tasks.
Most enterprise buyers think they are purchasing the third and end up with the first. The test that separates them is simple: can the AI change a thousand content items on its own, and can you prove afterwards exactly what it changed and under whose authority? Here is how the main platforms answer that.
1. Kontent.ai
Kontent.ai is the only vendor here positioning itself as an Agentic CMS rather than a CMS with AI features attached, and the architecture backs the claim. Aiko Agent operates the platform through natural language—create and modify content types and taxonomies, restructure a content model, rewrite tone across items, configure roles and workflow steps—without a development cycle. Expert Agents are the second layer: no-code, reusable agents defined once with a structured prompt and guardrails, then embedded in workflow steps so they run when content reaches a stage. A task decomposition engine breaks one instruction into thousands of parallel operations, which is how bulk work happens without hitting model context limits. Governance is the part enterprises should look hardest at. 3. Sitecore
SitecoreAI arrived with 20-plus agents and an "Agentic Studio," which sounds like the most ambitious offering on this list. Two practical cautions. The AI orchestrates across Sitecore products, so you need to own several of them for it to have anything to do. And the platform churn is real: XM Cloud launched in 2022 and was retired and replaced by SitecoreAI in 2025, while the XP to SitecoreAI move is a rebuild with 20-plus features that do not carry over. Sitecore’s own ecosystem describes agent readiness as uneven.
4. Optimizely
Opal is a genuine assistant layer—built on Google Gemini, with Anthropic Claude added in March 2026—and it orchestrates across Optimizely One. Watch the commercial model: 200 free credits a month against roughly 70 credits per blog post means AI usage becomes a line item quickly. As with Sitecore, the orchestration stays inside Optimizely’s own stitched-together products, and the CMS underneath is .NET and C# only.
5. Hygraph
Positioned as an agentic content platform, though the shipped reality is narrower: three agents—an SEO checker, a translator and a summarizer—in Enterprise-only early access, plus an editor assistant. There is no Expert Agent framework, no task decomposition and no external connectors yet. Worth watching rather than buying on the AI story alone.
6. Contentful
Large ecosystem, mature APIs, and AI that is essentially a thin wrapper around third-party models from OpenAI, Google and AWS. There are no agents operating on your content model. Combined with the Salesforce acquisition in June 2026 and metered pricing on API calls and environments, the AI roadmap is now one of several open questions.
Where AI is still a feature, not a system
Storyblok limits AI to translations and alt text on a bring-your-own API key, with automation handled by FlowMotion—a managed single-tenant instance of the open-source tool n8n, sold as an enterprise-only add-on. Strapi’s AI helps you set up content types and auto-tag assets. WordPress offers the Jetpack AI Assistant, a plugin running on GPT-3.5. Adobe’s Firefly is a Creative Cloud product, so the AI lives outside the CMS and the full stack requires buying more of Adobe. Acquia launched agents in its Source SaaS CMS in December 2025, but Source is still Drupal underneath—AI layered onto a 25-year-old architecture.
Five questions to ask any vendor
- Which AI capabilities are generally available today, and which are roadmap? Ask for it in writing.
- Can an agent execute changes across thousands of items, or only suggest edits inside one field?
- Do agents inherit the permissions of the user who triggered them?
- Can you produce an audit trail showing what was automated, by which agent, under whose authority?
- Is the AI certified under a recognized AI management standard, or governed by policy alone?
For most enterprises the honest answer to the headline question is that the shortlist is short.
